MALAYALAM MOVIE 2K9

Posted by k.ø.c.h.ü

2009 is a year that'll keep on flashing in the minds of every hardcore movie lover in Kerala!!!

K..k...fine...!! Don't panic...i'll use fewer words...More ACTION !!!

Only those movie that made me say 'WOW' are listed here :)
(not based on box office grossers)

Kerala Cafe

Brain child of Renjith, Kerala Cafe is the movie that'll make Malayalees proud...if anyone asks you what Malayalam movies are like just show them this one and tell "Oh! It's just a sample!!"

A collection of ten stories, ten different scenes that you'll see in your daily lives. Great performance by Mammooty, Salim Kumar, Prithviraj, Maniyan Pillai Raju, Siddique,Nithya, and Shanthadevi.

My applause would go to Renjith, AnwarRasheed, and Lal Jose. I never knew if Anwar Rasheed a maestro in the genre of comedy film making could deal with such a touching aspect of love. The scenes from his segment still haunts me...the abandoned Mother and the cat..

Anwar Rasheed

Lal Jose penned something we miss in our lives 'concern for others'. Each person you see around is a living being, with his own life, his own story.Everyone's in a rush...no time to bother about what happens around. And in PuramKazchakal he showcases one such man who lost someone important to him. The Mammooty magic was seen again. Similar concept was tried by Ranjith in Kayyopu too. But it was different.

PAZHASSIRAJA

Not a word more on this movie that made history...a product that the Malayalam Film industry can expose to the Indian Panorama with pride(yeah the idiotic selectors nodded no at Goa!!!). With all technical perfection(forget the rope stunts!!), acting grandeur(no no...I've written it all in my older post...read it here:link Pazhassiraja), sharp dialogues the movie will hold the number one position for a long time. It is supposed to be the biggest commercial hit ever released in Malayalam.

LoudSpeaker

Well I'll prefer to keep mummm when it comes to Loudspeaker...coz if I begin I won't stop. Personally I think this is the best movie I saw in 2009. It came in silently with little fuss...no shoutouts...I walked into the theatres calm and quite...and oh my lord...I found it real hard to return to mother earth. Wonderful direction. Mammooty was at his best...yeah I'm not exaggerating. Smooth, flexible...no no...I'll again get on a high if I keep on typing about his performance in the movie. As a fan I was disappointed with the Bhootham stuff, that probably targetted kids from 'Kindergarten':)

Daddy Cool was a new experience in terms of Camera, BGM, kind of a Bollywood stuff. I loved it though. But it was just the glamour part. I was waiting for something like Bhramaram when Loudspeaker walked in. A small movie with lots of hidden messages for the busy world.

Bhramaram

Well Blessy is well known for his magical skills...Kazcha, Thanmatra, Palunku, Calcutta News...all gifted special experiences to the audience. Bhramaram was an impressive movie that made me so excited that I chose it to write my first film review. So I don't think there's a need to repeat it all. You may check this link: Bhramaram. This movie is also special...in sense it was the only platform that the legend call MohanLal got to perform. Rest of his movies where mere trash. (Ividam Swargamanu by Roshan Andrews releases tomorrow) Red Chillies, Sagar alias Jacky, Bhagavan, Angel John, oh my lord...miss you Laletta. Be back soon.

RITU

And here it is...Hats off to ShyamaPrasad...SEASONS CHANGE AND SO DID MALAYALAM FILM INDUSTRY ever since it's release. With its release began what I would refer to as the golden age of malayalam cinema. Rithu was an offbeat rather slow paced movie viewing friendship from new angles. How many times have you seen on screen,a gal ordering condoms from a medical store just to mock the shop keeper? The movie was brilliant. The hero was charming...perhaps I loved his charactor more. Moreover the new gal in town got her launch pad:Rima Kallingal. She ain't such a beauty....but she's charming and a nice addition. The audiotrack of the movie had a feelgood factor attached to it.

PALERI MANIKYAM

Well this is a CLASSIC...a kind of a movie that'll rarely happen on screens. Ranjith again! Breaking all conventions that haunted Malayalam Movies!! Brilliant storyline(based on a novel with the same name by T P Rajeevan)

It's the 'boldest' movie that got released in 2009. Too strong!!!Cinematographer Manoj Pillai deserves special applause. A number of theatre artists walked in and stealed the show.
I would've loved to pen in a critical review on this very movie...but yeah too many movies to deal with :) n yeah exams coming up...so I would link you to this external site where I read the very best review for the movie: Link PaleriManikyam review.

Ranjith

NeelaThamara

Lal Jose is one director who always creates something delightful and pleasing to our senses:the eyes and ears. Neelathamara has it all. An ordinary tale penned so well (the M.T Effect). It's a tiny movie with a feel good factor. The highlight being The new hot gal on screen ArchanaKavi. The song Anuraga vilochananayi is the single song i've been repeatedly listening to, humming throughout, all these days since I heard it first.Awesome picturisation too. Watch it if u r doubtfull :)

Lal Jose

PASSENGER

I'll call this a trend setter...it's a lesson to every movie maker who think money is the answer to everything. A simple story...a simple cast...totally masala free...neat package with a moral to deliver. Though it lacked in few technical areas, and for having overestimated the video quality of webcams :) the movie was worth watching. It's more of a Sreenivasan starrer.

2 Hariharnagar

The mindless yet super cool comedy movie from hitmaker Lal was worth watching. Released as a sequel to one of the most loved movies of all times(Inhariharnagar) 2hariharnagar turned out to be a box office hit. But I couldn't enjoy the movie when i watched it for a third time when the vcd got released while I'm still ready to buy the first part-Inhariharnagar :) Old is Gold...

IVAR VIVAHITHARAYAL

Another simple movie worth watchin. The concept was cool. Many of my 'doubts' where answered :) The picturisation of the song "enikku paadanoru paatinundu" has just run into my mind as I type this :) The only negative of the movie was the climax that reminded me of a stretched rubber band getting broken. The tears of the heroine were unanswered :)

Last but not the least:

PROMISING FACES...NO COMMENTS:

Pazhassi Raja- South Indian cinema is back

Posted by k.ø.c.h.ü

I would congratulate the whole team for having brought into light the true FIRST BATTLE FOR INDEPENDENCE long before fighters even start thinking about a revolt in 1857. And I wonder why amar chitra katha is the only place a man gets exposed to the legend of Pazhassiraja. Not a single history text quotes about him I believe. Why? I think this movie truly deserves the honour for having brought into light the unsung heroes from the South. I pray for it to be gain popularity throughout the nation. Hope it doesn't sink just because of the Multi Crore Masalas that get released throughout India (yeah hit me...I do refer to Blue, AADHAVAN, or Vettakaran). Trust me the movie is worth.

It's not that often that a movie that can aptly be called 'perfect' hit screens. When this happens, after keeping people waiting for two long years, having announced about the lump of cash that'll dazzle the eyes of an average Keralite, super added with Himalayan hype, you have no choice but to say..."wow"

This is exactly what happened with Pazhassi Raja, which in my opinion is a National Movie that'll pump lots of adrenaline. (The last malayalam movie that did the same to me was Kalapani).

This is one movie that will make every South Indian proud. No...i mean no regionalism. Facts force me to speak. The best talents from the south have made an union just like a rare conglomeration of stars that occur once in a hundred years. It has been 20 years since the release of Oru Vadakkan Veeragadha, perhaps the only Malayalam movie that worked absolutely well with critics and the box office. The celebration is back again with the same trio: Mammooty-T.Hariharan-M.T.Vasudevan Nair.

MAMMOOTY

The highlight of the movie is that it's not merely a 'mammooty' movie...it's far far beyond it. It shatters the trend where movies(even classic ones) are made centering on the magical acting skills of one Male protagonist. It's an epic movie and unlike Oru Vadakkan Veeragadha, is not just another attempt to once again sketch the acting legend called Mammooty. New dimensions are being experimented.

The worst fear I had was the same. I didn't want to watch another Chathiyan Chanthu. As an actor...Mammooty wouldn't have gained anything new if Pazhassiraja was just a modified version. He has already done what can be rated as one of the best perfomance in Indian cinema when he transformed into the magical character wielded by M.T.Vasudevan Nair.

This time what we find is a Royal prince. I honestly say you'll just feel 'royal'...the writer and the actor have done a beautifull attempt here. Mammooty is in perfect control...as the roaring lion of Kerala (that's what Pazhassiraja is described as in history). The director could have very well cast him in the role of an angry Hero with lots and lots of punch dialogues, donning all action power packed sequences. Hats off...the story is different. We can absolutely see a calm, strategy making ruler. I don't have words to describe the work Mammooty has done. The right blend of expressions. Bodylanguage is beyond descriptions. Just as T.Hariharan quoted "he didnt' have to search for another person when the charactor took picture".

I don't know if he'll walk away with another National Award(Just like Oru Vadakkan Veeragadha). But he has done this really really well.

SARATH KUMAR

I'll first of all admit a sin I commited. I had grossly underestimated this angry man of the Tamil screens. I often called him the 'Suresh Gopi' in Tamil.

It's a fatal mistake. Actually, Sarath Kumar is the one who wins all the applause of the youth. He is bestowed with all the 'punch sequences'. I'll say, this will be one of the best perfomances he has done till date. I can't even picture another person who could've done the same justice to the charactor. Let me now proclaim myself to be his new fan. The apt musculature, body movements...he brought into life the true warrior anyone would dream of. Hats off to you sir.

PADMAPRIYA

This lady is one unpredictable talent. I would personally say, she is an asset to the film industry. Unmatched potential. She gave a hint when she simply mesmerised the audience with the flexible perfomance in KaruthaPakshikal(Directed by Kamal)

No one else can replace her. It's for the first time in my life that I clapped at the perfomance of a female actor. She's so...so natural...!!! The tribal woman is too real. She's too lucky to get such roles. Remember, the current scenario is one where the actors filled with calibre does nothing but shed clothes to get branded as sex symbols.(Yeah I am referring to Nayantara...who is one of the best actors fit enough to do class roles, but rarely does that...)

Padmapriya has the right blend of all the charactors required for the movie. The action sequences she has in hand will...yeah trust me....remind you of 'crouching tiger n hidden dragon'.

She rocks.

MANOJ K JAYAN

I don't have much to say about this gem of the Malayalam Industry. This role wouldn't have demanded any extra strain from this flexible man. He had already attained an immortal status with his Digambharan from Ananthabhadram(directed by Santhos Sivan). So I didn't actually see a Manoj K Jayan here...just a tribal hero. Amazing feat I should say.

SURESH KRISHNA

My second mistake. I used to ask myself 'what's he going to do in such a movie'. Indeed, he's done a couple of spectacular roles in his career. But I can't help telling. YOU ROCK...!!! Brilliant perfomance.(Why isn't he on wikepedia?? can't link him!!!)

KANIKA

My third mistake. All I expected was a sexy heorine who would save you from boredom. Not only did the movie give a single instance to feel bored, this fairy has done a wonderful perfomance as the queen. She exposes a truly mature actress. She doesn't have such a big role. But she has commentable played her part well. Can't explain how pretty this damsel is on screen. Malayalam Film industry has lately being falling short of 'charming' ladies due to the potential business of 'outsourcing'. It's then that this Goddess of Luck walked in through a Satyan Anthikad movie (Bhagyadevada). Actually this was her first perfomance. But who knew it'll take 2 years...!!!

K.J.Yesudas

This singing legend is once again back with the mesmerising and powerful voice. Ilayaraja has done a commentable work again. But since Ilayaraja always compose magic, I have nothing new to tell. Once I listened to the audio tracks before the release of the movie, I didn't know how things would click. But everything suits to the situation. Mathangamana Mabajavasa [K.J. Yesudas] has magical effect. Then comes Aadhiushassandhya Poothathivide [K.J. Yesudas, MG Sreekumar & Chorus] filled patriotism.

The camera: I can't actually say that I missed Santhosh Sivan here...because, the work done is truly awesome. The movie is full of stunning shorts. Except for few shorts where the actors 'jump' (where the use of rope is evident to the eye) rest rocks. Well jumping is one skill our actors still require to master. Even multicrore projects like Dasavataram and Kanthasamy sucks when it comes to 'jumping'. !!! (remember the shot where Shreya chases and hops on to Vikram's byke?? yukk)

Sound editing is again notable. Perhaps even if I didnt know that Rasool Pookutty was behind the scenes I would've enjoyed things without prejudice. Sounds appear so real. I'm waiting for a dvd to get released so that I can enjoy his magic with a headphone.

On the whole...this is one of the Best Indian films in the recent past. Filled with lots of scenes where you actually jump out of yours seats. Patriotism fills every second. I still have the scene where a British Villain gets hanged.

The best part is ,it's when I reached back home that I realised I was inside the theatre for 3hours and 20 minutes. Hats off to MT VASUDEVAN NAIR n T.Hariharan. Not a scene made me feel bored. The climax scenes are still getting replayed in my mind as I'm typing this.

Cast and other details @ Wikepedia: link

Best wishes to the movie. Thanks to Gokulam Gopalan(Producer) for having taken up the venture. T.Hariharan for weaving magic again. He is one rare director who never bring into action anything that is not worth watching.

M.T.Vasudevan Nair for THE brilliant script, and golden dialogues with trillions of hidden meanings. This time the gem of Indian Literature didnot create a 'twist' to history !!! :) This was one aspect we were waiting for. Everytime he comes out there would be an interesting twist...Be it the potrayal of Chanthu as a hero or Perumthachan as a villain or Bheema senan as a weeping warrior !!!

THANKS TO THE AUDIENCE...THE FIRST DAY COLLECTION WAS A WHOOPING Rs.1.5 CRORES..A RECORD.

i'M fed up...Just 'another' constitutional amendment..n as usual Media celebrated it...itz excusable...but now public hav started doin de same...bloggersvilla has taken up de cause it seems. too many posts supporting de phenomenon.

the Vitality of the current legal amendment is this: Homosexual community is susceptible to HIV infection and this high risk group was mostly reluctant to reveal same sex behaviour because of fear of the law enforcement agencies.(Frontline, July 31, 2009)

hmm hey lemme ask ye...just tell me wat ull feel wen u find out dat yer daughter is lesb or yer son is gay...b frank k..? i mean no offence :) curiosity(hope de cat's not killed)..

i'm not speakin against homosexuality...just dat im least bothered...itz 'human' u c...de makerz of de constitution included all "voluntary sexual intercourses against the order of nature wid any man, woman or animal" under UNNATURAL SEXUAL OFFENCES sec377 I.P.C.

wid 58 additional females for every 1000 males...kerala do exposed lesbianism thru media years back...n de De current amendments only favour intercourse wid concent...

wat i hate is de unwanted publicity dat de topic is gettin...der r a billion tiny yet vital day 2 day amendments dat passes our notice...Yeah my point is leave de homosexualz alone...de law makers did wat they do ...ensure 'no descremination''' The topic ends der...de media celebrated it for few days...but lez entertain it no more...let dem lead der lifez...de social stigma may drive off slowly..perhaps days wil cum wen people shout yeah im homosexual!!!but y all hue n cry...wid all 'jai jai' n 'i support them slogans'...???

now turnin 2 de lighter side...beastiality, incest, sodomy, buccal-coitus, exist de same way homosexuality exists..all r as per definition (ref-Forensic Medicine, by Reddy) Behavioral Abnormalities...Imagine laws being passed protecting them from descrimination...will de same media PLAY DRUMS??? will similiar posts fill de blogosphere...I think...just think k...'bestiality' will remain as uncensored comedy in movz like american pie or euro trip, n de rest will b part of de adult-xxx movies...Yet people luv 2 say 'I SUPPORT HOMOSEXUALITY'...HOLLYwood has been showing homos 4 ages...dey nevr created fuzz...no controversies...even chartbusters like V 4 vendetta or Watchmen showz lesb kisses...no probs...Deepa mehta directs a bold movie...ho...comes out de shourya of Indians...a constitutional amendment cums up...hoo here Indians r again sayin JAI...!!! attitudez must change...imbibe de nice messages n spread them...

my VERDICT:Homosexuality is an Abnormal Behavior (medical texts say)...better leave them 2 der own...No discriminations b lashed out.Counsel them...Personally I donno how ill tolerate if i find out my kith n kin r suffering wid such emotions..i might not punish them (hooo cant go 2 jail) but ill do advice them...

Never PROMOTE it at least...Homosexual relations r never safe...The very first case of AIDS in dis very world was reported among homos in USA...none will deny dat...De kindo physical relations dat homos can get into r dangerous...eg. Anal sex among gays boost risk of HIV transmission owing 2 de increased chance of blood contact...dono about de health risks among lesbians...MOREOVER HOW WILL DE WORLD SURVIVE YAAR?? HOWL POPULATIONs REPLENISH?? :)sO stop givin unwanted publicity 2 de topic...let us build a strong future...Der was just one adam n eve...fortunately they acted Naturally..!!!

(apa=American Psychological Association)

the APA removed homosexuality from its Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Psychological Disorders in 1973. In 1975 it then released a public statement that homosexuality was not a mental disorder. In 1994, two decades later, the APA finally stated, "...homosexuality is neither a mental illness nor a moral depravity. It is the way a portion of the population expresses human love and sexuality"

It's this that de Highcourt sited.

The SC has asked the govt 2 speed up.

Movie review- Bhramaram(mal)

Posted by k.ø.c.h.ü

Blessy is back...n now he is here exploring the minds of a 'brutally innocent' man who has landed in the worst debacle...someone who has lost everything.

The camera work adds on to the splendour of narration. Background scores are worthy too. It's kind of a thriller...that'll keep you puzzled till the climax. The first half is filled with suspense...gives you no clues. Lekshmi Gopalaswamy gives a decent perfomance. The picture of a busy stock-brocker's family is potrayed beautifully.

IT'S after a while that Mohanlal is doing something that matches his true potential. The emotional outbursts are acted out with the true lal-magic.

The director has however not forgotten 2 add spice...4 he knows now better about de movie-markets...after de not so successfull Palunku n Calcutta News (though both wer excellent movies of quality)...The HEROINE BHOOMIKA is just to shine her smooth n sexy navel.

My mistake...i haven't yet figured out why the title is 'BHRAMARAM'...a bug do give a guest appearance towards the climax.

'Brutally Innocent' is very well justified with the movie progression.

The movie do has it's set backs. It's with the second half. It appears as if the director was in a hurry.

Unlike the previous movies where megastars like Mamootty, Mohanlal were mere family men like any of us...in this movie we find a 'star wid lots of power'....who beats the villains (2death) and gives punch dialogues (Honestly i congradulate blessy or de script writer...whoever...i couldn't help myself but clap...these dialogue add-ins have been done in an intelligent manner that makes u believe that dey wer timely...kudos...)

On the whole...the man who fills the screen (both in physique!!! and with acting) is the pride of Indian cinema Mohan Lal...

One major flaw of todays movies is the trend of creating movies ready made for Mammooty or Mohanlal for show-off. Zero content movies like Phantom (flopped top-sided) or Sagar Alias Jacky (a huge money collector) keep on hitting screens.

Kudos 4 people like Blessy...4 keeping malayalam movie arena alive and sound. Just a request don't fall-in for the heros in Mohan Lal or Mamookka or Dileep...don't succumb to the taste of commercial success.

Beyond Akriti Bhatia's death...Asthma hit the spot light...

Posted by k.ø.c.h.ü

If this was Utopia, I would have recommended schools and colleges to employ doctors and nurses. Fortunately this a wish that can rightly be called 'impossible'. An honest attempt has room, however, 'to raise the health consiousness'. Diseases can hit any time any place. Most institutions give stress to sports medicine. Other modalities fail to grab atention.

The furore over Akruthi Bhatia's death added asthma to the hitlist...hopefully a red-alert may have lit up about the severity of asthma and why the brain requires oxygen. Hope no more kid will die of asthma in future...but there remains a multitude of other villains.

The school administrarion should maintain medical details about the students enrolled. If they feel it's cumbersome, they should atleast try to lure clinicians into regular health care camps within premises.

Parents should make it a note to inform the class teachers or whoever concerned about the probable medical risks that their kids suffer from. You can't entirely blame a teacher for remaining 'mummmmm' when one of her students suddenly enter an episode of siezure and hits the floor. The teacher least expected it, was least prepared for it. I am not supporting the principal for wasting 45 minutes when Ankiti Bhatia was fighting for air.

But just imagine if, in the scenario I mentioned, the teacher knew that the kid has a history of epilepsy, and she was trained for the basic first aid practises. She/he would always have given a better attention to this kid. A stitch in time could have had scope.

It might not be feasible to train each and every tutor around in the management of all medical emergencies. But the basics can be made aware of.

Let the media intervene. Not by adding to the Ankita issue...by starting columns and ads about the fundamentals of first-aid. How to manage emergencies. Let school and college administration start boosting 'necessary' training.

Here are my recommendations:

1)Display informative banners in school and college premises. Legible ones that are digestible to kids of different age groups. Stress on the most common risk factors and address the most emergency steps. It's an easy task...assign the high school kids...they'll search the library or net and make these for the school.

2)'basic' training to all staff members.

3)Routine medical camps for students

4) If possible maintain health records. Better interaction between parents and kids.

5) A fresh 'first-aid' kit with the necessary medications.

6) hmmm...why not conduct 'inspections' tp check whether all these are being 'done' :)

Insisting on medical details of students is 'okay' but needn't be made mandatory...But it has to be made a rule that 'every parent is probed for a relevant medical history' of kids.

Ready 4 a wash???

One thing i've not yet bothered 2 learn is de art of 'washing' clothes. I still run home every weekend 2 c my old IFB washing machine in action.

Everyone knows what a white coat is to a doctor...perhaps stethoscope and the coat r de first 2 hit one's mind when de term 'doctor' pops up.

Well folks...lemme confess...de indicator dat often reminded me itz time 2 wash de coat was de 'odour' ( n de colour too yuckkk!!!)
Hmmm...no more...i read a fascinating article...now im a transformed man...with 'washin coat n gown' added 2 my weekly schedules.

Curious?? click 2 read y i finally decided 2 get my coat WASHED!!!
